What is FIGG?
Forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) is a new tool that utilizes information gathered from the DNA of an evidentiary sample to provide a lead to investigators. This novel technique combines scientific practices involving genetic information (DNA), genealogy, and traditional investigative methods to hone in on a very short list of individuals from which the genetic material in question could have originated. This is especially helpful in finding the identity of unidentified human remains from a missing person, as well as the identity of the perpetrator from an otherwise suspectless case.
What can I expect from a FIGG consultation?
If you decide to move forward with a FIGG investigation with Helicase Forensics, you can expect professional, quality service in a timely manner. Keep in mind that some FIGG cases may be solved in as little as a week, whereas others are more complex and may take several weeks or even months. Rest assured, we will be diligently working on your case as efficiently as possible, but without cutting corners, so as to ensure the proper outcome.
The process will begin with a case intake consultation lasting approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
Next, Helicase Forensics will coordinate efforts with you to gain electronic access to the DNA profile to be used for the investigation. A 3-5 day initial investigation will be conducted to get a feel for the complexity of the case. Once this is complete, a follow-up meeting will be scheduled to discuss the preliminary results and anticipated timeframe for completion.
Upon completion of the FIGG investigation, a report will be provided that summarizes the findings, including a list of individuals believed to be the source of the genetic material in question. The latter is in an investigative lead for law enforcement to utilize to continue with their official investigation.
